Nestled in the Mahasamund district of Chhattisgarh, Barnawapara Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the most popular eco-tourism destinations in the state. Established in 1976, it spreads over 245 sq. km and derives its name from the adjoining villages Bar and Nawapara. The sanctuary is covered with lush tropical dry deciduous forests dominated by Sal, Teak, and Bamboo, making it a serene habitat for a wide variety of flora and fauna. Wildlife enthusiasts can spot leopards, sloth bears, wild dogs, jackals, hyenas, bison, barking deer, sambhar, and nilgai. The sanctuary is also a paradise for bird lovers with more than 150 species of resident and migratory birds, including herons, egrets, parrots, and peafowls. The best time to visit is November to June, when the weather is pleasant and animals are easily spotted around waterholes. Eco-resorts and forest rest houses around the sanctuary provide comfortable stays amidst nature. How to Reach Barnawapara from Raipur By Road: The sanctuary is about 100 km from Raipur (around 2.5 to 3 hours by car). You can drive via Arang – Patewa – Lawan route. Regular taxis and private vehicles are available. By Rail: The nearest railway station is Mahasamund Railway Station (45 km away), well connected to Raipur. From there, taxis and local transport can take you to the sanctuary. By Air: The nearest airport is Swami Vivekananda Airport, Raipur. From the airport, you can hire a cab directly to Barnawapara (approx. 120 km).
